The ego, a place of solitude

Social networks as Facebook and others allegedly rob us of self-reflection and let us forget what true friendship means, the american cultural critic William Deresiewicz said the Sueddeutsche Zeitung in an interview 2010. William Deresiewicz taught from 1998 to 2008 literature at Yale University. In 2009 he published in the Chronicle of Higher Education two highly acclaimed essays. „The End of Solitude“ is concerned with how the real-time Internet robs us of self-reflection. In „Faux Friendship“ Deresiewicz claims that social networks negatively affect our friendship experiences.

Here it appears, the old well known subject/object-monitoring scheme. The trivialforms of a transcendental Subjektphilosphie have been already returned to their intellectual historical starting point. Meanwhile academic chairholders believe something, which manifested itself in the form of a constitution processes of popular culture in the technological age since the success of this Subjektphilosophie: true friendship, true happiness, quality and authentic human being are existing only in the relationship face-to-face. Or does anyone know a pop song, an advertisement in which this is not addressed? This form constitution process was made possible by modern technology, and is not even addressed in their products.

The intervening technical regulations, that connect absent with absentees, preformed already through the exchange of letters, differentiated by the telegraph, the telephone, and increased complexity through cinema, radio, television, and finally through the Internet, people alienated alleged by themself. This can be believed because of the invisibilisation of something through that the credibility can be made: the technique. The dispositive degraded people always just to be a voyeur or a machine operator, and finally to be only the user. And it must be laughing: the expediency of such a decline is calculated by spreading the Internet, on the side of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung under the heading: digital and subsequently spread through links on Facebook and others.

But a little discretion would be appropriate. Closed self-referential systems have no control centre, no place from which one could say where the line runs to non-ego. Neurobiologists are working to explain the same thing for neural systems: no ego is there, anywhere. This does not change the fact that it addressed the relevance of identity, freedom and necessity would be pointless. Indeed, it is only the problem of human existence in the first place can understand if you have stripped of all superfluous illusions. The „ego“ is not gone, as less as a god disappeared, since no one longer wants to believe in him. It all remains in discussion. And who can say with certainty that if the experience of the ego develops as an illusion a place of solitude has a liberating and civilizing effect at the same time?
